Why as an Employer You Should Provide Bicycle Storage for Your Employees

If you haven’t heard we may have accidentally ‘ruined’ the world we live in…oops! Can it be reversed or at least the rate of the deterioration of it slowed down I’m not sure, but what I’m sure about is that we may as well have ago. Encouraging people to cycle is a good way to get cars off the road. This isn’t going to be some anti car rant – in fact I love cars – but if I had the option of being able to cycle to work a couple of times a week and know that I could safely store my bike and there were facilities to freshen up once I got there I’d leap at the chance.

As an employee I would love my employer to provide somewhere to safely store my bike. If employers were more forthcoming in providing bicycle storage they would also gain some benefits from it:

Having some secure bicycle storage may entice your employees to cycle to work, cycling – no matter how moderate – is a good workout for anyone and exercise gives people energy. More energy means increased productivity.

Increased levels activity will result in your employee’s immune systems being boosted – this will lead to them having less time off sick.

If every employer provided bicycle storage and if even 10% of employees cycled that would be 10% less traffic on the roads which as well as being an environmental benefit may mean that you could get home earlier!

By providing secure storage people that do already cycle for leisure and sport may be enticed in to cycling to work. A number of places that I have worked have not provided any secure method of storing bicycles and consequently I don’t feel very happy locking up my pride and joy knowing that some one could come and pinch it.

Perhaps you’ve already got people that cycle to work and keep their bike in the office, corridor, workshop or warehouse. It doesn’t look good when people visit your office and they can also be a bit of health hazard – there’s loads of sticky outy bits on bike just waiting to latch on to unsuspecting passerbys! Providing some bicycle storage facilities could rid your workplace of bicycles for good and prevent wintery wet tyre tracks through your corridors!

Employees that cycle to work are more likely to be on time than those that drive – more cycling employees therefore means better staff punctuality.
