A homemade wall mounted bicycle storage solution

Bicycle storage can be expensive but there are ways of cost effectively storing you bicycle out of harms way. If you’re have a restricted budget there is a very cheap way to hang your bicycle on the wall –all you need is a couple of old shelving brackets and some foam pipe insulation and you’re away. It is as safe and secure as any shop purchased system and you’ll be helping the environment too if you can find these parts that were bound for the tip.

This guide assumes that you’ll be fitting your homemade bicycle storage solution to a brick wall, here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 x Shelf Brackets
  • A length of pipe insulation
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Spirit Level
  • A number of screws to match the shelf brackets
  • Wall plugs
  • Electric Drill
  • Masonry drill bit to match wall plug size
  • Tape measure
  • Pipe/Cable Checker
  • Screw Driver

Step 1

Mark a line on the wall where you want the top tube of your bicycle to fit. 1m (3ft 3in) is usually a good height.

Step 2

Offer the first shelf bracket up to the wall.

Step 3

Aligning the top of the bracket against the line you have just drawn.

Step 4

Mark where the fixing holes for the bracket need to be.

*** Check that there are no pipes or cables running down the wall where you want to drill ***

Step 5

Using a masonry drill bit, drill the holes for the bracket. Insert the wall plugs and fasten the bracket to the wall.

Step 6

Repeat Steps 1 – 5 for the second bracket. Make sure that you have positioned the bracket in the correct place for your bicycle frame.

Step 7

Cut the pipe insulation slightly longer than the length of the bracket arms and slide it on. If you use insulation that is slightly too small it should grip the side of the arm. If it is too big then use zip ties or tape to secure them. Make sure that the insulation extends out further than the brackets to protect your bicycle frame from scratches.

Step 8

Repeat Step 7 for the second bracket.

Step 9

Hook on your bike and stand back and admire your handy work!
